Success Story: Start 'Em Early   
An Indiana library uses Family Reading Nights to start children on the road to literacy at an early age.

I have a wonderful success story from the Whitewater Valley Community Library District. 

I'm a student aide at both the libraries in our district and the major success I have seen in our libraries is the adolescent interest.  Both libraries promote reading in our community and I have seen a lot more people come into the library in the past six months than probably ever before.  I do my part by helping tell my friends about the neat services that we offer and how many good books we have. 

Recently we have acquired a new Director and Assistant Director in Charge of Programming, who also believe it is never too early to start reading.  They host many programs involving younger children in the reading circle and it helps teach them to like reading.  One program we offer is our Family Reading Nights, which are usually huge successes with about 15-20 children per program.  We offer crafts for the children, snacks, a story reading, and time to find books to take home.  We have teenagers that volunteer, and most of the people I know from around here spend quite a bit of time in the libraries.  We offer computers and research books for them to use to help with school work or just to learn for the fun of it.  We offer a geneology section for adults and there is a GED class offered at both libraries.  We provide stories and crafts to the local nursing homes also. 

We love our patrons; we love our community; we love our jobs!
