Reminder: We the People Bookshelf Grant (due January 29, 2010)

Hi Everyone -

This is just a reminder that the We The People Bookshelf on A More Perfect Union application is available online. Both school and public libraries are eligible to win hardcover copies of the 17 selected titles, as well as bookplates, bookmarks and posters. The application, programming information and more is on the project website. The application should take no more than 1 hour to complete (according to the information I received), and it's an interesting selection of titles this year:

Hi Helen,

Yes, anyone can attend the breakfast. Louise Moulton at Providence Public Library, Staff Director for the RI Center for the Book, will post on the RARI website when the tickets are available to purchase. They are usually $25.00 per person and include breakfast at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet. Louise put the tickets on sale about six weeks before the breakfast, but she stops taking reservations about a week before so she can give a final count to Rhodes for the catering. Book clubs or groups are welcome to book a table together. Groups of 8-10 can reserve an entire table.

Thanks for attaching this flyer . I sent it to the Smithfield Child Outreach Program.They were very glad to have the information to pass on to parents with children in the Integrated Preschool and Kindergarten classrooms.

I received a postcard from Leonardo Music about his summer program on the "Make a Splash Read" theme. His music sounded enjoyable. He's done a couple CDs. He'll be in CT on July 9 and is willing to come to RI the week before or for a few days after. (I would want him after because of the 4th.) He charges $400.00 per show but is willing to negotiate if we have more shows - he can do 3 or 4 a day depending on distance. Check out his web site leonardomusic.com and let me know what you think.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows

Shortly after the end of WWII, Juliet Ashton of London receives a letter from a founding member of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - only the beginning of a series of letters bridging two islands and chronicling the story of the Guernsey islanders indomitable spirit during the German occupation.

Save the Date: The 8th Annual May Breakfast:
May 1, 2010 with Keynote, Annie Barrows, co author of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.

Ms. Barrows is also the author of the childrens series Ivy and Bean and The Magic Half. Mary Ann Shaffer, a librarian and editor, nurtured the tale about Guernsey for twenty years before committing pen to paper. Unfortunately, Ms. Shaffer passed away in February, 2008 before the final edits to the manuscript were complete. She asked her niece, Annie Barrows, to complete the revisions - and the story is now ours to share with all Rhode Islanders.
