Hello,
I run the Share - a Story Book group here for 4th and 5th grade students and their parent/ caregiver. It runs from September to June . I choose the title each month with input from the school librarian from the school where most of the kids go. She also attends the group.

Some families read the book together , some seperatly during the month but all agree it is a great way to spend time with their child. Especailly . if they have other children because it is nice one - on -one time with their 4th/5th grader.

Each family signs up to bring a snack each month. In June when we wrap it up we have an ice cream party. Which of course everyone loves !

I have found keeping it simple works for me. One year I tried to add more " bells and whistles " but the feedback I got was it is better to keep it basic.

The children always amaze me each month with their insight about a book or the connections they make. Sometimes we agree to disagree about a book - which is okay too.

I used to do the same type of thing. I would have a monthly book discussion for grades 3-5. Usually a children's book that has been made into a movie. We would do the normal discussion, I have questions on a paper each kid gets one and we take turns reading them out loud and answering them. I would show a clip or two from the movie and we would talk about it. I usually did some type of game like trivia. With Charlie and the Chocolate Factory we did a skit with props and stuff that was fun. Because I ran into the same situation you did, I've now switched over to doing Event Parties. I have a Diary of a Wimpy Kid Pizza Party on Saturday. I have games based on the book like pictionary, trivia and guess who am I. I have prizes like movie tickets, books, gift card to the local pizza place and stuff like that. I find the attendance for the big events to be even better than the monthly book discussions I used to do which was about 8-10 on average. I have 22 kids for Wimpy Kid.

tween book discussion

Hi! Are there other libraries that host tween (or similar) book discussions? If yes, just wondering what you do to encourage participation and other success?
I started one over a year ago (for girls 10-13), and at first it did really well, then slowly the numbers dwindled down to just one or two girls. I always put a lot of effort and time into them...having a snack relating back to the book, while having the discussion. That was always followed by a craft or fun game, again relating to the book. The kids always seemed to enjoy it but sadly never enough to remember the next meeting. There were always issues with everyone agreeing on the same book and/or reading the book for the meeting.
I look forward to your suggestions..they are greatly appreciated!

ALSC seeks host site for 2011 Arbuthnot Lecture featuring Lois Lowry

CHICAGO— Applications to host the 2011 May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture are now available. The selected site will host Lois Lowry, internationally acclaimed author and two-time winner of the Newbery Medal, who will present a paper that will be considered a significant contribution to children’s literature. A library school, department of education in a college or university or a children’s library system may be considered. The lecture is administered by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association.

Host site application forms can be downloaded at www.ala.org/alsc; click on the link under “Breaking News.” Completed applications are due May 1, 2010. Information about host site responsibilities is included in the application materials. The lecture traditionally is held in April or early May.

"I am very excited to see applications to host Lois Lowry for the 2011 May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture,” said Carol Edwards, chair of the ALSC 2011 Arbuthonot Honor Lecture Committee. “She has been one of my personal favorite authors for a long time and I am so eager to hear what she will say, and yet I am almost as eager to see the proposals for hosting the lecture. It will all become more real when I can envision the day. "

Lowry’s career spans more than 30 years. She received the Newbery Medal, in 1990 for Number the Stars, set in Denmark during World War II, and in 1994 for the eerily dystopian The Giver (both Houghton Mifflin). She was the recipient of the 2007 Margaret A. Edwards Award, which honors an author’s contribution to young adult literature. Lowry writes for a number of audiences from preschool to young adults, and her work has varied greatly in terms of content and style.

ALSC established this lecture series in 1969, with sponsorship from Scott, Foresman and Company (now Pearson Scott Foresman) in honor of author May Hill Arbuthnot. The lectureship, now funded by the ALSC May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture Endowment, has the distinction of featuring many notable authors, critics, librarians, historians, and teachers of children’s literature from various countries. Past lecturers over the decades have included Mary Ørvig, Leland B. Jacobs, Virginia Hamilton, Maurice Sendak, and Richard Jackson. Kathleen T. Horning will present the 2010 Arbuthnot Lecture, hosted by the Riverside County (Calif.) Library System.

2010 Notable Children's Books

Each year a committee of the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) identifies the best of the best in children's books. According to the Notables Criteria, "notable" is defined as: Worthy of note or notice, important, distinguished, outstanding. As applied to children's books, notable should be thought to include books of especially commendable quality, books that exhibit venturesome creativity, and books of fiction, information, poetry and pictures for all age levels (birth through age 14) that reflect and encourage children's interests in exemplary ways.

According to ALSC policy, the current year's Newbery, Caldecott, Belpré, Sibert, Geisel, and Batchelder Award and Honor books automatically are added to the Notable Children's Books list.

For your convenience, Notable Children's Books that have also received other ALA awards, such as the Coretta Scott King Award, Michael L. Printz Award, Alex Award, and Schneider Family Book Award, are noted on this list.

Hi all,
I have been wondering about this problem for a while and it has resurfaced again so I'm asking you all what you do...
What do you do with an author, who's "series" gets divided by cataloging- into J AND YA? Do you pull them all and use just one classification or split them up? I understand that subject matter can be a decision maker but sometimes not and yet they get divided.
Anyone else have this issue? I have several titles in my J collection, that once were J but now are considered YA and I don't know if I should pull them all and re-catalog-time and money issues!
Just curious.

I wanted to let everyone know that RILINK will be holding a workshop on Book Clubs for Boys on March 11, 2010 at Eldredge Elementary School in East Greenwich. It will be from 3:45 PM to 5: 45 PM and will be presented by Emily Ruth Brown, Children's and YA Librarian at the Mount Pleasant Branch of the Providence Community Library. The registration information will be up on the RILINK website soon and I will be sending out a flier as soon as the information appears on the website. This topic is one that should interest teacher librarians at all grade levels and will include ideas on how to make book clubs appealing to the boys in our schools. Please mark you calendar for March 11, 2010 and look for further information about registration via email.

Hello Everyone,

It often comes up at workshops here at OSL that Children's Librarians are one of the few types of librarians that do not meet regularly within OSL. I am posting this message to offer a Children's Roundtable Discussion here at OSL on Monday, March 15th at 12:30 - 2 p.m. You can bring your lunch and I will have drinks, fruit, and cookies to contribute.

There are many resources, ideas and experiences you can share with each other to benefit all but also, I would be happy to help you with ways you can use Millennium to identify and fill in the gaps in your collection, learn what is circulating most in the children's rooms both at your library and across the consortium. I can show you ways to make it easier to create the displays that you put out each year. And I can show you how you can quickly keep track of the books used in your library that are never checked out but still have in house use.

Also, you can discuss with each other what you do to improve circulation of your materials, what crafts you do that are great hits, how you handle particular problems, how your programs are going, etc. Recently a discussion at a workshop arose about shelving Picture Books and the advantages and disadvantages of using bins versus traditional shelving.

If this is something you are not interested in or simply do not have the time for, that's fine, but if you would like to come, I welcome you. Just let me know if you plan to come so I can set the room up appropriately. Feel free to bring crafts, project ideas, etc.

Great stories make Great Ballets

I'm forwarding this information on behalf of one of our board members--thought you all might be interested.

Festival Ballet Providence will be performing three programs of ballets this year which are based on great children's stories!

In October (the 3rd, 4th 10th and 11th) they will be performing "Peter and the Wolf". In February (7th, 14th and 21st) they will be performing "Pippi." These performances will take place at the ChatterBox Theater located at Festival Ballet's Studios at 825 Hope Street.

On Halloween weekend (Friday Oct 30th at 7:00, Saturday Oct 31st at 2:00 and Sunday November 1st at 2:30) Festival Ballet will perform a large stage, full length production of the ballet, "The Widow's Broom." This is of course based on our own Chris Van Allsburg's book, with sets by Tony Award winner Eugene Lee and fabulous choreography by Victor Plotnikov at the VMA Arts and Cultural Center.

It would be wonderful if you could schedule readings of these children's books at your libraries a few weeks before the performances. As you know, all these stories are classics and they also make wonderful ballets enjoyed by the entire family. We of course hope the readings will stimulate interest in the performances.

For “Widow's Broom” we have small cardboard displays for your library as well as posters for both “Widow’ Broom” and “Peter and the Wolf” to help drum up attention both for the reading and the performances.

Please let Mark Morin at Festival Ballet 353-1129 know of your interest and he will give you more details about the performances and deliver a display to your library.

Providence Public Library welcomes artist and children’s author Nina Crews to its Central Library, 150 Empire Street, on Saturday, April 4 from 2:30-4:00 PM for a special program which will also celebrate Youth Art Month. Nina Crews is known for her beautiful and clever photo collages of children playing in city neighborhoods. Her books include: One Hot Summer Day, Snowball, The Neighborhood Mother Goose and most recently, Below. Her talk will be aimed at librarians, teachers, parents and children’s literature enthusiasts. Several of her books will be available for sale and signing following her talk.
