OLIS COURSES
LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES ON WEBJUNCTION

The Rhode Island Office of Library and Information Services (OLIS) provides online courses free*  to members of WebJunction RI. These courses are actually paid for by OLIS through our partnership with WebJunction; when you enroll in a WebJunction course, your enrollment is counted toward the finite number of courses that OLIS has pre-paid. When enrolling in a WebJunction course, please follow these simple guidelines:

  • Carefully consider which course you would like to take and read all course descriptions and expectations prior to clicking on "Enroll Now;" once you enroll in the course, this course is counted toward our allotment.
  • Take no more than 2 courses at any one time.
  • Complete all courses in a timely fashion.
  • If you have problems checking out your course or if it is listed as $40, please read Signing Up for Courses [pdf].

WebJunction also offers a series of  Webinars; upcoming webinars are always visible on the WebJunction RI homepage under Events.  The archived recordings of past learning webinars are collected under the Learning webinars documents tab.  These and other events are listed on the Events page in the Member Center.

For more information on the many opportunities for learning on WebJunction, follow the Learning Pathfinder.

OLIS also offers continuing education courses throughout the state. Visit the OLIS Continuing Education page for more information.

*A very limited number of courses cost $25, a discounted rate made possible through OLIS' partnership with WebJunction.

ABOUT COMPETENCIES

The WebJunction Competency Index is a compilation of competency statements that address a broad spectrum of library practice and service. The WebJunction team reviewed competency sets from many library organizations, aggregated the statements and synthesized them into the Index. The competencies help serve as a pathfinder to courses and content that address knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with specific areas of librarianship.

Given the variety of library size and organizational structures, there was no attempt to combine competencies into work roles and classifications. Instead, WebJunction offers a menu of categories and competencies from which an individual or library can select and combine to meet their particular needs and structures.

In January the Library Management section of the Index was rolled out. It is divided into sub-categories (such as Budget and Funding), with associated competency statements listed under each sub-category. In the coming months, WebJunction will continue to roll out additional sections; the Technology section will be added in March and the full Index will be issued as a WebJunction publication later this year.

To learn more about competencies, click the Competencies tab on the Course Catalog.
