Program Possibility
4:37 PM EDT 7/22/09
Hi, all, I received the following as a program proposal. After talking with the presenter, who used to work at Cranston Public Library, I offered to share it with all of you: Aaron @ GVL ============================= To Whom it may Concern
I’m writing to propose a program for adults or teens at your library. I developed a screenwriting workshop for teens, while working at the Cranston Public Library, that took place over the course of four meetings. I have since modified that into a three-hour program for adults, which I have presented on a fee-for-service basis. I am an MLIS librarian and also hold a Master of Fine Arts in Fiction Writing and Screenwriting
I recently presented the adult program at North Kingstown Free Library, where it was very well-received. I limited enrollment to 20 people, and there was a waiting list. Screenwriting is a very particular type of writing, and short of enrolling in a college or graduate-level course, people can rarely get instruction in it.
Topics I cover include: formatting, creating characters, best practices, common mistakes, editing, and how to get your screenplay produced. I also supply attendees with websites that provide information on: copyright, formatting, contests, and how to read scripts for free. I use lecture, video clips, and examples to provide clarity in the concepts I present.
After having taken my workshop, a person will have the information necessary, and the confidence to sit down and start creating a mini-screenplay, or full-length feature script.
For teens, I cover the same topics, but have found that more than one session, and more interaction works best. The program I did at Cranston included four sessions, each an hour long, with two weeks in between to give the teens time to put my instruction into practice. This system worked well, and the regular attendees had between 30 and 150 pages each at the end of the sessions. Students said that they had learned a lot, and would like to continue regular bi-weekly sessions to deal with issues that come later in the writing process.
To date, this program has proved very successful, and I encourage you to consider it. I can also do similar programming in fiction writing or creative non-fiction. I can provide a resume and references upon request.
Sincerely,
